One of the Hudson Valley’s most iconic venues is writing a brand-new chapter.

The historic Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie—once known for legendary performances—is now transforming lives offstage, becoming a launchpad for careers in the performing arts.

Through the Empire Training Center for the Arts (ETCA), The Chance has evolved into a hands-on training ground for adults looking to break into the industry. And now, with its second cohort starting April 21, that opportunity is growing even bigger.

This new Arts Administration program includes a partnership with New York Stage & Film at Marist University—giving students a direct bridge to real, paid work during their summer season.

The first class already proved the model works: real gigs, real connections, and real paths into the industry.

No traditional college route. Just passion, curiosity, and a chance to step inside a historic venue that’s been completely reimagined.

The Chance has always been about unforgettable moments with K104's Not So Silent Nights.

If you drive across the Bear Mountain Bridge, get ready to see some major work getting underway soon.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $93.8 million project to replace the aging deck on the 101-year-old Hudson Valley landmark. The bridge was last re-decked back in the 1970s, and with decades of traffic and weather taking their toll, it’s time for an upgrade.

Construction is set to begin this spring and will happen in three phases, with the entire project expected to wrap up by December 2028. The new lightweight concrete deck is designed to handle today’s heavier truck traffic and should last more than 50 years.

The project isn’t just about the road surface. Sidewalks will be widened to five feet on both sides to better meet ADA standards, making it safer for pedestrians, including the many hikers using the bridge as part of the Appalachian Trail.

Plans also include upgraded drainage, modern barriers separating pedestrians from traffic, and four new scenic overlooks where you’ll be able to stop and take in those incredible views of the Hudson River and the surrounding Highlands.

The historic bridge connects Orange and Rockland counties with Putnam and Westchester, and when the work is finished, it should keep this iconic Hudson Valley crossing strong for generations to come.

New York DMV Going Dark for 5 Days in February for Major System Overhaul

The DMV is hitting the brakes — statewide

If you’ve got DMV business to take care of, you might want to handle it sooner rather than later.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is going completely dark for five days in February. That means every DMV office will be closed and all online services will be shut down as part of a massive system upgrade.

Starting February 13 at 2 p.m., DMV branches across the state will close. They won’t reopen until the morning of February 18. During that time, you won’t be able to process transactions online either.

Why the shutdown? Believe it or not, some of the DMV’s computer systems date back to 1968. Yes — nearly six decades old.

DMV Deputy Commissioner Lisa Koumjian says the current system is incredibly difficult to update and modernize. So instead of patching it yet again, they’re doing a full overhaul. Technicians will use the five-day window to consolidate 30 million records from multiple outdated systems into one streamlined platform.

Right now, employees sometimes have to move through eight to ten different systems just to complete one task. The new setup will bring everything into one unified system.

So what does that mean for you?

Officials say once the new platform is up and running, customers should notice shorter wait times, better efficiency inside offices, and more services available online.

Bottom line: If your license, registration, or any other DMV matter can’t wait, take care of it before February 13 at 2 p.m. Otherwise, you’ll have to sit tight until the 18th.

And as always, be careful online — the DMV is also warning about a rise in scam texts linking to fake DMV websites. If you get a suspicious message, don’t click it.

We’ll keep you posted right here on K104.

Alright Hudson Valley, let’s talk snow… because a big one is on the way!

Our Hudson Valley will be seeing a Significant/Major Winter Storm starting Sunday morning through Monday morning. Predictions right now are calling for the potential of 10'' to 18' plus inches of snow, The snow really starts to ramp up Sunday around noon and that’s when conditions could go downhill fast with extreme cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills.

If you can stay off the roads, that's the best move. Travel is discouraged. But if you have to be out, please slow it down and make sure your car is ready. A few smart safety tips:

Keep a winter storm kit in your car (blankets, flashlight, water, snacks, phone charger)

Make sure your gas tank at least half way filled

Let someone know where you are going and when you would be arriving

Watch for icy patches, especially on bridges and overpasses

At home, now’s a good time to prepare:

Charge your phones and devices

Stock up on essentials and medications

Set your thermostat to a safe level and keep space heaters away from anything flammable

Check in on neighbors, seniors, and anyone who might need help

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this storm and sharing updates as they come in. Stay tuned to K104's Stormcenter for the latest information.

A quick heads-up for everyone here in the Hudson Valley — flu cases are on the rise across our area and throughout New York State.

Local doctors are seeing more visits for flu-like symptoms, and New York just recorded its highest number of flu cases and hospitalizations in a single week. Health officials say the flu season is expected to peak later this month, so now’s the time to be extra mindful.

The good news is there are simple ways to protect yourself, your family, and your coworkers. Flu shots are still recommended, washing your hands really does make a difference, and if you’re not feeling well, staying home helps keep the flu from spreading around our Hudson Valley communities.

Big news for animal lovers here in the Hudson Valley — and it’s the kind that gives you all the warm-and-fuzzy feels.

The Hudson Valley SPCA is gearing up for a major move to the former Squirrelwood Equine Sanctuary in Montgomery. And this isn’t just any move. This 92-acre farm (yeah… 92 acres!) means the HVSPCA can finally expand their care beyond cats and dogs to help all kinds of animals. The animals already living on the farm will stay right where they are, now under the HVSPCA’s wing. It’s a huge step toward their mission of helping every creature that needs a second chance.

If you’ve been following their journey, you know they acquired the old Goshen Humane Society building back in 2023. Now they’re preparing to sell their New Windsor property as they take on this next big chapter.

Of course, a move like this comes with a hefty price tag. The HVSPCA has launched a GoFundMe to help transform the Montgomery farm into a fully functional, safe, and comfortable haven for all the animals they’ll be rescuing.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus and the Orange County Veterans Service Agency will honor local veterans this holiday season as part of Wreaths Across America.

The annual tribute begins with the wreath escort parade on Thursday, Dec. 11, which will travel down Main Street in Goshen at approximately 10:15 a.m. The main wreath-laying ceremony will follow on Saturday, Dec. 13 at noon at the County’s Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located at 111 Craigville Road in Goshen.

“Each wreath represents a life of service and sacrifice,” Neuhaus said. “Participating in Wreaths Across America is a meaningful way for our community to come together and show our gratitude to the veterans who have protected our freedoms. I encourage residents to honor a veteran in their life or one who may have no family left by sponsoring a wreath and helping us ensure every hero is remembered.”

Wreaths are available for $17, and donations of any amount are welcome. Checks can be made payable to Nam Knights M/C and mailed to the Veterans Service Agency at 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, N.Y. 10924.

“Wreaths Across America is a powerful tradition that helps ensure our veterans are remembered and honored,” said Christian Farrell, Director of the Orange County Veterans Service Agency. “We encourage residents to join us whether by attending the parade and ceremony or sponsoring a wreath to be placed at the cemetery.”

Residents are invited to take part in honoring the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans this holiday season.

If you’re looking for that perfect dose of holiday cheer—minus the crowds, the chaos, and the last-minute shopping panic—Orange County has you covered. The 17th annual Holiday Lights in Bloom is back at the Arboretum in Thomas Bull Memorial Park, and trust me… this one’s worth bundling up for.

From November 28th through December 28th, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 5–8 p.m., the Arboretum transforms into a sparkling, glowing wonderland. Imagine garden-themed light displays—giant flowers, whimsical animals, glowing insects—all tucked along peaceful walking paths. Kids will be wide-eyed, adults will feel like kids again, and everyone walks away a little more in the holiday spirit.

The best part? It’s totally FREE.

Yup—no tickets, no fees. Just pack the gloves and the good vibes. A couple quick notes: pets have to sit this one out, groups need to stay under 15 people, and parking fills up fast. Plan to arrive by 7pm so you have time to wander before the lights shut off at 8.

Because of construction at the Ottaway Education Center, the Friends of the Arboretum Holiday Boutique will be popping up in the greenhouses this year—open Nov. 28 through Dec. 20 (closed Sundays). It’s a great spot to grab a handmade gift or just warm up for a minute.

If you need details, directions, or just want to pre-plan your glow-filled adventure, hit up orangecountygov.com/parks or call 845-615-3828.

If you’re looking to flip the switch from “regular life” to “full holiday mode,” nothing does it faster than that first whiff of fresh pine. And good news — Orange County, NY is basically the North Pole of Christmas tree farms, and this year’s lineup is loaded with cozy vibes, hot chocolate, and fields of trees that look like they walked straight off a Hallmark movie set.

Whether you’re team cut-your-own or team grab-it-and-go, you’ll find the perfect Christmas tree just an hour from NYC — surrounded by crisp country air, winter charm, and enough Instagrammable scenery to power your feed through New Year’s.

As Amanda Dana from Orange County Tourism & Film puts it: picking out a real tree isn’t just a holiday chore — it’s a tradition. And honestly? She’s right. Research even says a real tree boosts your mood. (We don’t need science to tell us that, but hey, we’ll take it.)

Here’s the K104 holiday hit list — the spots you need to check out this season:

🎄 Emmerich Tree Farm – Warwick

Nov. 28–30, Dec. 6–7 | 9:10 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
This place is basically Santa’s Airbnb. Blue spruce, concolor firs, tractor rides through the woods to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus, hot chocolate, wreath making — and yes, The Real Santa Experience. Reservations required, but totally worth it.

🎄 Pine View Farm – New Windsor

One Weekend Only: Dec. 6 & 7 | 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Ten. Thousand. Trees. If you can’t find “the one” here, you may be overthinking it. Scenic trails, mountain views, and trees up to 10 feet tall. A true winter wonderland.

🎄 Stone Oak Tree Farm – Slate Hill

Weekends starting Nov. 29 | 10 a.m.–dusk
Eight acres of gorgeous trees and a crackling fireplace waiting for you in the barn. Add in complimentary cocoa, candy canes, and even an on-site B&B? That’s a holiday vibe.

🎄 Pierson’s Farm – Middletown

Nov. 28–Dec. 23 | Hours vary
Cut your own tree, grab a wreath-making class, or snag pre-cut beauties anytime. And don’t miss the Winter Fest Holiday Market on Dec. 6–7 — it’s Christmas turned up to 11.

🎄 Rocky Bar Farm – Westtown

Nov. 29–30, Dec. 6–7, 13 | 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Celebrating their 20th season! Choose-and-cut trees, precuts, and a cute holiday shop loaded with wreaths and ornaments. It's everything great about small-town Christmas.

Whether you go for the adventure, the hot chocolate, or the perfect tree that somehow always looks smaller in the field than it does in your living room (happens every year!), Orange County’s tree farms are ready to make your season shine.

Bundle up, bring the family, and make a memory — K104 style.

If you thought your biggest fall problem was pumpkin spice overload, think again — because the flu is coming in swinging this year!

Health experts are sounding the alarm, and it’s not just hype — they’re saying this could be one of the worst flu seasons we’ve seen in years.
Here’s the deal: In just the past week, confirmed flu cases across New York State have jumped by 30%.
So why the big move?

National Taco day is on a Tuesday! Go figure. Here is a list of LEAST favorite toppings- side note- pineapple is VERY good on a pork taco- Trust me

1. Cilantro, which is notoriously divisive.

2. Black olives, which are also fairly divisive.

3. Lettuce. It's unclear if the main issue is wilted lettuce . . . the wrong type . . . OR if people are just opposed to "unnecessary" greens.

4. Cheese. This may come from people who are lactose intolerant, but several people specifically mentioned American cheese or liquid cheese sauce.

5. Sour cream.

6. Pineapple. (???)

7. Radish.

8. Broccoli.

9. Onion, particularly raw onion.

10. Tomato, particularly raw or "mushy" tomato.

11. Salsa, especially jarred salsa.

12. Hot sauce, mainly TOO MUCH of it.

13. Rice.

14. Beans.

15. Avocado or guacamole. This is also controversial. But it seems like more people are opposed to WARM guacamole or grilled avocado.

This summer, the closure of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry sent ripples through the Hudson Valley—sparking frustration, concern, and now, a grassroots movement to bring it back. At the heart of this push is the Save The Ferry Campaign, a coalition of community volunteers from both sides of the river united by one goal: restoring ferry service between Newburgh and Beacon.

For many, the ferry was more than just a convenience—it was a lifeline. Commuters from Newburgh relied on it to catch the train in Beacon, while others saw its potential to boost local economies, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a scenic and serene river crossing. What they all agree on? The ferry was the best way to cross the Hudson.

But this campaign isn’t about returning to the status quo. Volunteers argue that the ferry’s limited pre-closure schedule discouraged ridership. They're advocating for a more robust and rider-friendly timetable—similar to the successful Ossining-Haverstraw ferry, which offers extensive weekday and summer weekend service.

To build momentum, the campaign is circulating a petition throughout Newburgh and Beacon, aiming for 2,000 signatures. As of mid-September, they had collected about 275. The plan is to present the petition to Governor Kathy Hochul, who holds significant sway over the MTA—through budget control and board appointments, including that of MTA Chair Janno Lieber.

Campaign organizer Naomi Hersson-Ringskog emphasizes that the governor has both the authority and responsibility to act. The group is also challenging the MTA’s justification for the shutdown, citing unverified

New York State is experiencing a colorful fall foliage season, with some areas like the Adirondacks and Catskills reaching peak colors while others are just beginning to change.

The summer drought has impacted the timing and vibrancy of the foliage, with regions like the Finger Lakes under a drought watch. Ecologists warn that stressed trees may not display vibrant colors, leading to a potentially less colorful peak in Rochester.

The impact of the drought on the fall foliage remains to be seen as the season progresses.
